Condition: Good. Rubbing at edges, corners. Some leather break-down on covers. Significant wear on spine edges. Bindings tight & sound. Endpapers in superb condition. Very minor foxing/toning of text. All illustrations and maps in very good condition. Gilt lettering/decoration on cover and spine in very good condition. Please see photos.
Details: The second of two volumes. Quarto-size volume with boards covered in red pebble-grain leather, half-bound in Moroccan red leather. Gilt lined decoration on corners and bindings. Spine with five raised bands decorated and lettered in gilt. Front decorated with a pagoda surrounded by stylized letters "CHINESE EMPIRE", all in gilt. Glazed marbled paper endpapers reinforced with red linen tape at hinges. Seventy nine steel-engraved illustrations, three fold-out maps, all in beautiful condition. Gold page edges all around. No date in the book, but research points to mid-19th C. Very rare and historically/artistically important.
